What is the average price for landscape design?

landscape design services 750px

The average price for professional landscape design typically falls between $2,000 and $8,000, but that range can move higher or lower depending on the scope, property size, and level of customization. For high-end homes and long-term outdoor investments, landscape design is not an expense—it’s a multiplier on property value, usability, and curb appeal.

At the lower end, basic concept plans (layout, plant suggestions, and rough hardscape ideas) may start around $1,500–$2,500. These are ideal for homeowners who want direction but plan to manage installation themselves.

More commonly, homeowners invest in full-service landscape design, ranging from $3,500–$6,500, which includes detailed layouts, material specifications, grading considerations, lighting concepts, drainage planning, and plant selections tailored to your property, sun exposure, and lifestyle.

For luxury landscapes—think patios, outdoor kitchens, fire features, retaining walls, custom stonework, and phased master plans—design fees can reach $7,500–$15,000+. These projects require deeper planning, engineering coordination, and precision to avoid costly mistakes during construction.

Here’s the key thing most homeowners don’t realize: great design saves money. A professionally designed landscape prevents overbuilding, reduces change orders, and ensures every dollar spent during installation is intentional and cohesive. Poor design—or no design—almost always leads to rework, wasted materials, and regret.

When you work with a professional landscape design team, you’re not just paying for drawings. You’re investing in:

  • A clear vision for your entire property
  • Smart material and plant choices that last
  • A plan that increases home value and enjoyment
  • A roadmap that avoids expensive errors
  • If you’re serious about creating a beautiful, functional outdoor space, the first step isn’t construction—it’s design.

Attleboro, MA

History

In 1634, English settlers first arrived in the territory that is now Attleboro. The deed that granted them the land was written by Native American Wamsutta. The land. It included the towns of Cumberland, Rhode Island, until 1747 and North Attleborough, Massachusetts, until 1887. In 1643, Attleboro was part of the adjacent town of Rehoboth until it was separately incorporated as a town in 1694. In 1697 in response to an unwanted amount of disturbances, mainly from nearby tribes of natives, the town had a meeting and ended up deciding that selectmen would keep tabs on strangers and foreigners as well as banning certain ones from entering the town. The town was reincorporated in 1914 as the City of Attleboro, with the “-ugh” removed from the name, although North Attleborough kept it. In the 1600’s many of the people who settled in this area were from Attleborough, England, after which the city is named.

During the Native American insurgency in the colonial era, Nathaniel Woodcock, the son of an Attleborough resident, was murdered, and his head was placed on a pole in his father’s front yard. His father’s house is now a historical site. It is rumored that George Washington once passed through Attleborough and stayed near the Woodcock Garrison House at the Hatch Tavern, where he exchanged a shoe buckle with Israel Hatch, a revolutionary soldier and the new owner of the Garrison House.

The city became known for jewelry manufacturing in 1913, particularly because of the L.G. Balfour Company. That company has since moved out of the city, and the site of the former plant has been converted into a riverfront park. Attleboro was once known as “The Jewelry Capital of the World”, and jewelry manufacturing firms continue to operate there. One such is the Guyot Brothers Company, which was started in 1904. General Findings, M.S. Company, James A. Murphy Co., Garlan Chain, Leach & Garner, and Masters of Design are jewelry manufacturing companies still in operation.

In late 2003, The Sun Chronicle reported that a state investigation had been launched into the deaths of three women in the city from glioblastoma. In 2007, the State of Massachusetts issued a report concluding that although the diagnosis rate for brain and central nervous system (CNS) cancers was higher than expected when compared to statewide data, the increase was determined not to be statistically significant.

Scorecard, Environmental Defense‘s online database of polluters, lists seven facilities contributing to cancer hazards in Attleboro, including Engineered Materials Solutions Inc., the worst offender in Massachusetts.

In 2002, the Massachusetts Public Health Department was asked to evaluate the former Shpack Landfill, on the border of Norton and Attleboro, for its cancer risks. The investigation continued at least through 2004. The informal landfill included uranium fuel rods, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds.

Geography

Attleboro has an area of 27.772 square miles (71.930 km), of which 26.779 square miles (69.356 km) is land and 0.994 square miles (2.574 km), or 3.59%, is water. Its borders form an irregular polygon that resembles a truncated triangle pointing west. It is bordered by North Attleborough to the north, Mansfield and Norton to the east, Rehoboth, Seekonk, and Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to the south, and Cumberland, Rhode Island, to the west, as well as sharing a short border with Central Falls, Rhode Island through the Blackstone River. It includes the areas known as City Center, Briggs Corner, West Attleboro, East Corner, East Attleboro, North Corner, Maple Square, Camp Hebron, Oak Hill, Dodgeville, East Junction, Hebronville, Park Square, and South Attleboro.

Waterways in the city include the Ten Mile River, fed by the Bungay River, the Manchester Pond Reservoir, and several small ponds.

Attleboro’s highest point is 249-foot (76 m) Oak Hill, in the southern part of the city, north of Oak Hill Avenue.

Attleboro is on the border between the Massachusetts and Rhode Island regional dialects of New England English: the eastern part of the city is in the same dialect region as Boston, and the western part in the same dialect region as Providence.

What does a landscape designer do?

landscape design services 500px

A landscape designer is the professional who turns your outdoor ideas into a clear, functional, and beautiful plan—before any money is wasted on the wrong materials or layout. Their job is to design an outdoor space that looks great, works for your lifestyle, and adds long-term value to your property.

First, a landscape designer evaluates your property as a whole. This includes grading, drainage, sun exposure, soil conditions, existing plants, and how you currently use the space. They also factor in your goals—whether that’s entertaining, privacy, low maintenance, family-friendly areas, or luxury features like patios, fire pits, and outdoor kitchens.

Next, they create a custom design plan. This typically includes the layout of walkways, patios, lawns, planting beds, and structures, along with recommendations for materials, plants, and finishes that fit your home’s architecture and local climate. A good designer doesn’t just make things look nice—they design for longevity, proper water flow, safety, and seasonal interest.

Landscape designers also help you avoid costly mistakes. They ensure proper spacing of plants, correct elevations for hardscapes, and smart placement of features so your landscape matures beautifully over time instead of becoming overcrowded or dysfunctional.

Most importantly, a landscape designer acts as your strategic guide. They help prioritize phases, control budgets, and create a plan that can be built all at once or over time without losing cohesion.

If you want an outdoor space that feels intentional—not pieced together—a professional landscape designer is the foundation. Schedule a design consultation and start with a plan that makes every dollar count.

This customization means your spring and fall clean-up cost is only as much as you dictate. You have complete control over the budget and expenses so that you can get the most out of every dollar you invest in maintenance.

Why Can’t I do my Own Landscape Design?

landscape designer patio 500px

Our professionals have decades of experience in the industry. Whether cutting a crisp edge to a lawn or monitoring soil pH, our crew has the necessary hands-on knowledge to accomplish any task properly. While the average homeowner can do many of these clean-up jobs, they will inevitably take more time and effort.

Consider this. Let’s say you want to install a retaining wall along two garden beds at the front of your house. One option is to research supplies, create blueprints, develop alternatives, negotiate supply prices, transport materials, and install the retaining walls. Each of these tasks adds up to several days’ worth of effort.

Conversely, you can hire us—your local hardscaping expert—and use the time you’ll save reading a book, playing with your children, traveling, or whatever else you’d like. Meanwhile, our hardscaping team will install a durable and beautiful retaining wall. While cost is always a worthwhile consideration, beyond the time and effort you’ll save, the guaranteed quality is indisputable. We stand behind our work.

What are common landscaping mistakes?

digital landscape design 500px

One of the most common landscaping mistakes homeowners make is skipping the design phase. Jumping straight into construction without a plan often leads to wasted money, awkward layouts, and features that don’t work well together. A landscape should be intentional, not built one impulse decision at a time.

Another frequent mistake is poor drainage planning. Ignoring water flow can cause pooling, erosion, flooded patios, and even foundation issues. Drainage must be addressed before installing lawns, patios, or planting beds—not after problems appear.

Improper plant selection and spacing is also a major issue. Homeowners often choose plants based on how they look at the garden center, not how large they’ll grow or whether they’re suited to the site’s sun and soil conditions. This results in overcrowding, excessive maintenance, and plant failure within a few years.

Many people also underestimate the importance of scale and proportion. Patios that are too small, walkways that feel cramped, or features that overpower the home can make an outdoor space feel unbalanced and uncomfortable.

Finally, budget misallocation is a costly mistake. Spending heavily on visible features while neglecting foundational elements like grading, base materials, or lighting leads to short-term results and long-term problems.

The best way to avoid these mistakes is to work with a professional landscape designer. A proper plan ensures smart decisions, efficient spending, and a landscape that improves with time. Start with a design consultation and build it right the first time.
